Dr. Reynaldo C. Villareal is recognized for his significant contributions in the breeding program of the wheat international research institute (CIMMYT). At CIMMYT, he was actively involved in the evaluation of breeding lines, synthetic hexaploids, and interspecific hybrids resulting in the development and release of more than 150 improved wheat varieties that have been grown in 36 countries. He also utilized innovative breeding methods including the exploitation of wild relatives of wheat and the incorporation of slow rusting as a resistance trait against leaf rust of wheat.
