Dr. Michael L. Tan is recognized for his significant contributions to anthropological scientific research, education, advocacy and development work. Among his contributions are: (1) comprehensive analyses of traditional medicine which branched into different areas of inquiry related to medical- and health- related behaviours; (2) revitalizing traditional medicine with his field research and review of scientific studies resulting in the publication of the book “Philippine Medicinal Plants in Common Use: Their Phytochemistry and Pharmacology” (1978); (3) promotion of rational drug use and national drug policies; and (4) prevention of HIV/AIDS and promotion of reproductive health. In all of these studies, he provided profound insights into specific aspects of Filipino social behaviour.
