Dr. Porfirio Alexander M. Aliño is recognized for his important accomplishments as a marine ecologist in investigating the nature of patterns and processes in coral reefs and associated ecosystems in the country. His scientific works have produced more than 150 scientific and technical publications, manifested in various conservation work, extension outreach initiatives, and development assistance. His more than 30 years stint at the University of the Philippines’ Marine Science Institute has generated over 20 marine scientist graduates, inspiring and nurturing them to become models and exemplars of their respective expertise. He has also done various technical assistance projects including capacity building efforts for people ranging from fishers to policy makers, towards planning and implementation of adaptive management in the coastal region. He has been instrumental in the establishment and coordination of the Philippine Coral Reef Network in 1997 serving as the coordinator and co-edits biannual publications of the Reefs through time series (2003, 2005, and 2008) and State of the Coasts Report in 2010.
